Depression Self Help Tips
One key to overcoming depression is
depression self help. Anti depression
medications only treat the symptoms of depression and do
not cure depression. If you are taking anti depression medication,
you should know that you should still find ways to do depression
self help.
One of the best things you can do for yourself
is to learn to live one day at a time. If something is truly
painful to you and it seems like it is something that will be
impossible to face for the rest of your life – don’t worry about
tomorrow. Live in the present moment and do not allow yourself to
focus on the what ifs of tomorrow.
If living in the moment seems too overwhelming,
you should consider therapy. Psychologists and Psychiatrists can
teach you coping skills. Cognitive Behavior Therapy can help you
learn to identify their thoughts and feelings, determine how your
belief system is rooted, help you find ways you can counteract
negative beliefs, teach you how to adopt coping techniques and
identify situations that cause you stress or anxiety.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is practiced by both psychologists and
psychiatrists. If you think you can benefit from this form of
depression self help, talk with your doctor. He or she can
recommend someone for you.
Social support is
one of the best tools of depression self help. Finding and
interacting with people who are also dealing with depression can go
far in helping you see that you are not alone. Hearing the stories
of others can help you to see that maybe your depression is not as
bad as it could be. Your story may also help others who are
suffering from depression. In addition, you should surround
yourself with people who care about you. Friends and family members
are usually more than happy to listen to you and offer a shoulder
if you need it. Do not isolate yourself. Reach out to others and
take comfort from them. Once you start interacting with your family
and friends you may see that you are highly favored and are of much
value to them. This can go far in boosting your self esteem and
feelings of self worth. Love can be its own miracle drug.
No matter how much you may hate the though of
it, you must try to do some sort of exercise. Exercise can go far
in improving and lifting your mood. Do something that was once a
pleasure for you. You can take a swim, ride a bike, go bowling,
play tennis or simply take a walk through a park. Do not think that
you have to join a gym or work up a massive sweat. The key is to
just get up and move.
Watch the kinds of food you eat. Many people who
are doing depression self help report that foods that are full of
caffeine, chemical additives and sugar will make their mood swings
worse. Try to eat foods that are high in protein and complex
carbohydrates.
Another important part of depression
self help is to get on a regular sleep schedule. Try to go
to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each
morning. If you are suffering from insomnia, talk with your doctor.
He or she can prescribe something for you that can help you body
get into a healthy sleeping pattern.
Lastly, you should take your anti
depression medication exactly as it is prescribed. Do not
change your dosage, skip doses or discontinue your medication
without consulting your doctor first.
