You should be mindful of the signs of depression. These signs will help you monitor your mental health, as well as at health of your family and friends. Depression is marked by a combination of symptoms that last for at least two weeks without there being any sign of improvement. Here is a list of the general signs and symptoms of depression

 

Sadness, anxiousness and an empty mood is a sign of depression. The sadness is not the normal “blues” that many people feel on occasion. It is a persistent sadness that the individual cannot shake. The person may be teary eyed and cry. Anxiousness is not the usual nervousness that we all feel sometimes. This type of anxiousness makes it hard for the person to function. It is sometimes marked by fears and/or phobias. A person that is apathetic and seems to not feel anything may also have depression.

 

A feeling of helplessness, worthlessness and guilt can also be a sign of depression. The individual may not feel worthy of anyone’s time, attention or praise. They may not feel worthy of anyone’s love and they may feel guilty if someone goes out of their way to help them in some way. Guilt may also arise over a past event that the person is dwelling on. The individual may also be very pessimistic, negative and have a bleak outlook on the future. All of this may be a sign of depression.

 

An individual who is depressed is generally not interested in anything. He or she does not enjoy the things they once did. This is a sign of depression, especially if it is accompanied by fatigue and low energy levels. A depressed person may find it hard to get out of the bed and go about the day. While it may appear people who are depressed are constantly sleeping, their sleeping is usually disturbed and not peaceful.

 

People who are depressed may have drastic changes in their appetite. This is another sign of depression. Individuals may lose their appetite and much weight or they may have an increase in their appetite and put on weight. Leading a sedentary lifestyle increases the chance that a depressed person will gain weight.

 

Individuals who are depressed may have thoughts of suicide or dwell on death. This is a sign of depression that should not be ignored. If someone you know, or yourself, is having this thoughts you should seek out help immediately.

 

Individuals who are depressed need to find that ray of light at the end of the tunnel. The good news is that the symptoms of depression are treatable. Through anti depression medication, therapy and self help tools, individuals can triumph over their depression and get back to living again. If someone you know is depressed and is adamant about not wanting to get on medication, try to encourage him or her to at least get into therapy. Not only can therapy help them get to the root of their depression, but it will give you peace of mind knowing that they are under the supervision of a professional. It can take the burden off of you and help to alleviate some of the weight you may feel in regards to your depressed loved one.
